Five for Friday 421

Welcome to Friday,

After a week full of errands, I made a final trip to the grocery store on the corner, stocked up on sparkling water, fresh bread and butter, and am quite ready to hunker down for a rainy weekend indoors. Here’s the most interesting reads from around the Internet:

Herman Melville’s meditation on the conflicting energies and influences which must meet and combine to produce that most moving of all man-made creations, Art.

From musician and culture writer Ted Gioia, “Fourteen Signs You Are Living in a Society with No Counterculture“. We’ve all seen the consolidation of news outlets and film making whittled down to just a handful of names, but seeing this list laying out basically all of culture only makes it that much more stark. Also, I loathe the term “content” which is why you will never find it referenced here.

A primer on Tanner Greer, the writer behind The Scholar’s Stage blog. While this is a concise summary, I want to underscore Greer’s understanding of the history, literature, and ideology of the Far and Middle East, makes his insights particularly valuable to anyone seeking to better understand that part of the world (which is, in an increasingly connected world, everyone.)

I do love to see something unexpected on an otherwise normal city street (or country field). These “spite buildings” themselves are quite interesting, but wow – people really have constructed monuments to pettiness in the process.

Currently reading: Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman

Enjoy your weekend.
