Five for Friday 240

Welcome to Friday,

It’s been a sunny, but just-chilly-enough week here in South Carolina. In other words, prime Autumn weather. Between jogs and photo walks, I’ve been making it a priority to get outside an enjoy the beautiful weather while it’s here.

I’ve also been studying leadership more closely, focusing on biographies of political and military leaders. If you have a favorite leader or biography, I’d love to hear your recommendations!

Here is what I’m reading this weekend:

I love the natural light of this Melbourne home.

How women wearing masks during the 1918 pandemic were viewed.

On the weirdness that is Western civilization. Relatedly, why the West needs Plato more than ever.

I find the promise of virtually unnoticed movement through time and space fascinating, which is exactly the experience airlines were selling in the 1970’s jet-age. “What could be a better definition of the experience of fluid motion? Human and machine had seemingly become one.”

Adam Swerver’s October cover story for The Atlantic on reconstruction. It’s so important to look to history when framing the current moment, and I’m excited to see what Mr. Swerver has discovered.

Have a beautiful weekend.
