Five for Friday 226

We’re taking things slowly and seriously over here. As the state struggles with covid rates, we’re watching birds, discovering bird nests, and otherwise exploring this little piece of land we call home. As we go into this weekend’s celebration of American Independence, I’m optimistic; look how far this experiment in democracy has come!

This weekend’s links:

The vibrant paintings of American artist Abbott Fuller Graves.

Real airport, imaginary travel in Taiwan.

Why Humans Freak Out When They Get Lost.

An insightful essay addressing why arguments seem to always regress to the lowest form of name-calling: Are Americans As Stupid as We Seem on Twitter?

Finally, I’ll leave you with this excellent op-ed on the importance of fighting to protect speech we disagree with. If your opponents don’t have freedom of speech, you don’t have freedom of speech.

Wishing you a safe and beautiful weekend, wherever you are.
