Five for Friday 434

Happy Friday,

This weekend is a major American holiday, signaling the unofficial end of summer. We are taking the holiday off here, as well.

Here is what I’ve seen and loved from around the Internet this week:

“The best conversations have lots of doorknobs.”

“Even if you aren’t likely to live long based on your genes, you can still extend your lifespan by engaging in positive lifestyle behaviors such as regular exercise and sitting less.”

I enjoyed author Shelby Foote’s Paris Review interview, and think his answers reveal the importance of understanding history. Knowing random dates and names of events isn’t important; understanding how physical and ideological battles culminated and continue to influence nations and people is the important aspect. We should all be studying history.

No, hot drinks are not more likely to cool you down. A review of the contrarian “science” making headlines.

A Photo Essay: “What my three year old has in his pockets.” It always amazes me how fascinating children consider rocks.

Currently reading: The Perfect Storm by Sebastian Junger

Have a relaxing weekend.
