Welcome to Friday,
Here are five things I thought worth sharing this weekend.
The Paris Review has unlocked their 1965 interview with William S. Burroughs.
Somewhat relatedly, Ted Gioia this week published a fascinating introduction to an oft-forgotten chronicler of the counterculture in the US after WWII. Gregory Bateson was an accomplished polymath, across biology and linguistics, among other disciplines, who published the synthesis of his findings in 1972’s Steps Toward an Ecology of Mind. Gioia uses this text as a guide to how a counterculture might form in today’s flattened, Internet-ruled media culture.
Consider the manliness of Joan Didion.
“Beer was not invented just once; rather it seems that almost every culture that had grains figured out that they could be turned into booze.” A history of beer in the ancient world.
What is the shape of the universe?
