Here are five things I thought worth sharing this week.

This summer marks the hundredth anniversary of the Paris exposition which gave the Art Deco movement its name. Click for the gorgeous photographs, stay for the interesting history! For example, the exposition was originally planned to take place in 1914, but was delayed a decade by the outbreak of WWI.

In praise of re-reading.

Though the name “Carrara” has long been associated with luxury and wealth, centuries of mining the beautiful marble has depleted the region’s resources, while advances in technology and globalization have left locals mostly cut out of the profits. This report from inside the movement pushing to close the quarries prompts a lot of questions about regional pride and the stewardship of natural resources.

On thought experiments as tools of reflection. 

In the 1800s, sailors exchanged maritime superstitions which were supposed to keep men safe at sea. Here are some of the strangest.
