Five for Friday 704

Welcome to the weekend,

Here are five things I thought worth sharing this week.

The U.S. National Parks Service is working to restore the American Chestnut, called “the redwood of the East”, which has long been threatened by blight.

The Mona Lisa will be getting her own room in the Louvre.

The U.S. Copyright Office has issued new guidelines concerning the use of AI in creating work. You can find the report itself here.

“On a somewhat different issue, it became clear to me that the management I was dealing with didn’t understand the difference between having an opinion and having an informed, factually sourced opinion.” Paul Krugman’s statement about why he left the New York Times demonstrates a troubling trend in opinion editing toward the simple, shiny, and, ultimately, pointless.

I found this inquiry into fake shipwrecks and Charles Eliot’s profile of John Gilley of Maine an interesting discussion of how easily “truth” can be obstructed or even hidden by narrative.

Have a great weekend.
