Five for Friday 349

Welcome to Friday,

This sabbatical week, I’ve been baking nearly non-stop. We have quick breads and crunchy cookies and and tender cakes occupying most of the counterspace. I’ve enjoyed the practice in doing tangible, physical tasks – cracking eggs, mixing batter, chopping walnuts – over the sabbatical week. Stepping away from the computer more often and spending time making things with my hands has been a welcome change of pace.

Here is what I’d like to share this week:

Abe Books most expensive sales of 2021. I always enjoy seeing what rare books are still around in circulation.

There are two kinds of people – pirates and farmers.

Orson Welles’ lunch with actor Henry Jaglom. There are some fascinating cultural references here. My favorite is Welle’s recollection that movie theaters in the 1930s were much more casual affairs than they are now.

Meet the world’s most influential intellectual.

A deep dive on why movie dialog has become so difficult to understand, along with suggestions to correct it.

Currently reading: Dune by Frank Herbert

Have a lovely weekend.
