Five for Friday 326

Welcome to Friday,

It’s been a challenging week to stay focused in my corner of the internet. Every so often, a few weeks come around where I feel frazzled and completely out of ideas. When this happens, I take a step back to do a quick check list: how much time have I spent reading actual books? How much time am I spending on my phone? How has my sleep been? Usually one of those three are out of whack, sending my entire week out of alignment. Once I get the errant habit back in order, my days suddenly go much more smoothly. So, this is a reminder to check in with your own daily routine and take the opportunity to get back on track.

Here is what I’d like to share this week:

This short explanation of sophrosyne, the ancient Greek concept of mindful moderation. The term describes a combination of self-control, moderation, and temperance; what an important and lacking quality in today’s culture of excess.

The most precious resource is agency. The author describes how the early lives of notable people stand out most to him, prompting the question, “Do children today have useful childhoods?”

Somewhere between Tinder and Airbnb there exists a clever idea for travel accommodations: the Human Hotel, which matches travelers and their destinations with people who share their interests. Stay in Paris with an entrepreneur, or spend a long weekend in NYC with an art critic.

Chess continues to grow in popularity, even in the age of the Internet, expanding from online chess to the fascinating world of streaming chess matches. It’s so interesting to watch this ancient game evolve in real time with technology. Chess.com boasts over 57 million users, and surpassed Fortnite and League of Legends earlier this year as the most watched game on Twitch. What’s next for the timeless strategy game?

Always helpful; a deep dive on saying no as a business owner. “I’ve found that the first part of learning to say NO is learning to accept that offers and opportunities are merely an indication that you’re on the right path- not that you’ve arrived at a final destination you can never find again. If someone is choosing YOU, it means you’re doing something right. And that is the biggest opportunity you can receive- the chance to recognize that your hard work is paying off. And if you continue to do good work, those opportunities will continue – and improve- over time.”

Have a beautiful weekend.
