Five for Friday 142

Happy Friday, and welcome to the weekend!

A few weeks ago I was introduced to a culinary tradition, which I’d never heard of before. I had a slice of apple pie with cheddar on top! This, according to Atlas Obscura, originated in England, whose apples at the time were rather bland. Cheese on top added a salty complement to the dessert. This tradition was eventually brought over to America, where it seems to have survived mainly in the Midwest.

Now, there are two or three camps of apple pie toppings; plain, with cheese, or with ice cream or whipped cream, all with varying levels of controversy. For what it’s worth, I enjoy apple pie with any of those options. It is so funny how regional traditions can take on a life of their own!

Which leads me to this week’s links:

What a creative way to harness social media for personal growth – reading classic literature through Instagram stories.

Finally, this week scientists announced they had successfully photographed the silver-backed chevrotain for the first time. This small deer-like mammal was found in southern Vietnam, and was previously thought lost to science. Complement with a round-up of animals rediscovered after being thought extinct, and the process of designating species threatened, endangered, or extinct.
