Five for Friday 131

Things that make you wonder…

While the benefit and distance of hindsight does tend to make trends seem stranger, these trends are puzzling now.

Here are some puzzles I’m delving into this weekend:

Why are Jelly shoes back? I realize fashion is currently revisiting the iconic looks of the nineties, which for the record, I hated the first time around. Do we really need to make this formerly little girls’ shoes available in adult sizes? Apparently, we do. We really do.

This can be frustrating and puzzling or encouraging; why your friend’s gym routine may not work for you. Fortunately, there are more exercise apps, classes and philosophies than ever, making it feasible to find one that you love.

Bees, not refugees. Does modern xenophobia find its roots in environmental activism?

The puzzling trend of engagement rings in s’mores. Why do we need to put the ring in any sort of food, is what I’d like to know.

Is it really rice? What makes it wild? Isn’t all rice from Asia? The misunderstood wild rice, America’s grain.

Currently reading: Enlightenment Now by Steven Pinker; I’m revisiting this excellent text as I’m working through writings of Enlightenment philosophers.

Have a wonderful weekend!
